Have you ever visited or joined a pilgrimage to an Orthodox monastery?
While you can do either, visit for just a day or a pilgrimage for multiple days, at St. Anthony Greek Orthodox Monastery in Florence Arizona.
With the blessing of Fr. John Reimann, from January 22-26 of this year, 8 pilgrims experienced “koinonia” and traveled there to have fellowship, prayer, respite and performed service work. The pilgrims were Fr. Dn. Anthony Al-Turjman, Nick McGee, Dominic Campos, Alex Williams, Anthony Miller, Scott Lindaman and Henry Schrik.
While at the monastery, the group had the pleasure of having separate discussion meetings with Fr. Demetrios Earl Cantos, parish priest of the Orthodox Mission Church of Arizona in Florence Arizona (the same town that the monastery resides) and Fr. Philaret, senior monk priest of St. Anthony Monastery.
Operated under the jurisdiction of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, is home to about 42 monks and contains nine chapels and has very diverse operations that helps keep the monastery very self-sustaining (i.e. the monastery boasts over 5,000 olive trees, many citrus orchards and various crops that are all maintained by the monks and pilgrims who visit!).
While truly having experiences that will last a lifetime, all of the men went for various numerous personal reasons.
“It is heaven on earth, a safe haven, a place to truly find yourself. It is a journey each one of us should take at least every year to put away the worldly things and enjoy time without distractions with God” Statement from Dn. Anthony
Still curious about their experiences? Be sure to ask any one of them when you see them at church! Want to maybe plan a visit or a trip, see Dn Anthony, Fr. John or Fr. Nathan before contacting the monastery.
